social skills
Kindergarten Classroom lessons are provided to help children practice their social emotional skills.
These are on Monday afternoons for 20 minutes using the Second Step program.

Please see parent letter links if you are a Kindergarten parent for further information.
Hello Kindergarten Parents/ Guardians!

This is a busy time of learning for your children.  Children are learning how to organize their bodies and brains in the classroom and understand and manage their feelings.  They are learning how to make a friend and be a friend.  And they are learning how to solve problems with other children.  They are learning these things throughout the day in the classroom, on the playground, and at home.  Children are learning by watching and listening to how teachers, family members, and friends interact with each other.  But just like reading and writing, these areas of learning also have specific skills that need to be taught.  We will be using a program called Second Step: A Violence Prevention Curriculum to help us learn and practice these social-emotional skills.  Children who learn and use these skills are more likely to get along with other people and to do better in school.  Families are an important part of the Second Step program.   In addition, supplemental curriculum from Mindful Schools will be taught.  This is a great opportunity to get to know all the West Kindergarten students and for them to know me!

Each Week I will post an update of our lesson so you will know what to discuss with your child at home.  You can also find this lesson on my canvas page.  If you have any questions please contact me at emaher@nvps.net or 361-3470 ext 26217.

Respectfully,

Liz Maher

10/4/21 - Today was our first mindfulness lesson of Mindful Bodies.  Mindfulness is paying attention to what is happening in the present moment.  Mindfulness can help us learn to pay close attention to many things.  It can also help us calm down when we are angry, sad, frustrated, or have any difficult emotion.  Mindfulness can help us feel happy too.  It can also help us to focus and do well in school, sports or music.  After learning about our mindful bodies, we listened to the story, The Color Monster, to begin our introduction of feelings.  We learned about Happy, Sad, Scared, Mad, Confused, and Loved.  We can color about our feelings or talk about our feelings with our friends, teachers and family!
